What can we do with the vacant land in the heart of Merimbula? 2012

The Merimbula Chamber of Commerce would like to gather the ideas of the Merimbula community for the use of the vacant land bounded by Market Street, Monaro Street and Palmer Lane previously occupied by the Mobil Service Station.

The BVSC will take possession of this land toward the end of 2012, and as indicated in their long term financial plan, they will construct a bypass road to redirect traffic to Merimbula Drive to assist with traffic management. This work is planned for 2014 and will use approximately 1/3 of the land.

The Council has also indicated that they are interested in developing a portion of the land toward the Northern end for non-commercial purposes.

The Merimbula Chamber of Commerce executive wishes to make recommendations to Council regarding the best use for the remainder of the land. To do this effectively we need your input.

Some ideas that have been discussed include a permanent location for the library which could include an art gallery space. A sculpture garden with a lunch area. A place for Christmas carols and a Christmas tree. The possibility of closing off part of Market Street, say to Beach Street, to become a pedestrian mall. Perhaps these ideas will inspire you to come up with even better ideas.

The Chamber are encouraging the community to provide feedback for a period of 3 weeks, until Wednesday 4th July 2012. Once we have received all feedback we will then collate this into two or three proposals for the site.

These plans will be presented at the next OPEN Chamber Meeting on Monday, 6th August 2012 at the Golf Club, 6.30pm. At this meeting we will be asking for the community to VOTE on their favoured plan. The winning plan will then be drawn up by a landscape architect and presented to BVSC along with a funding solution.

We feel this is the best approach to ensure that the Palmer Lane/Market Street corner site is developed for the long term prosperity of Merimbula and in a manner which reflects the community’s wishes.

Please send your feedback to the President, Natalie Godward natalie@ourmerimbula.com.au or any member of the Merimbula Chamber executive no later than Wednesday 4th July. ALL feedback is very welcome.
